In his personal life, his piety and precaution was of a very high level to the extent that on matters in which there were differences of opinion, he would follow the preferred opinion which was closest to caution. He would never leave the cautious opinion even at times of need.

Here is a small example of his caution: During all his various illnesses and sicknesses, no matter how severe his illness was, he never sat and performed salāh. During his final illness, as long as he could stand and perform salāh by getting the support of two people, he would stand and perform his salāh. [This is how he used to perform it]: two or three people would carry him with much difficulty, he would stand up with two of them standing on either side with their hands around his waist. His standing, bowing and prostrating postures would all be performed by taking support from them. His attendants would constantly request him to sit and perform his salāh, but he would neither reply to them nor accede to their request.”

Maulwī Muhammad YahSāhib rahimahullāh asked him on one occasion: “Hadrat! If it is not permissible to sit and perform salāh even in such a situation, when and in which condition is it permissible to sit and perform salāh?” He replied: “According to Imām Sāhib [Imām Abū Hanīfah rahimahullāh] a person is considered to be ‘able’ if he is able to perform an act with the support of others. Since I have friends who carry me and help me to perform salāh, how can I sit and perform salāh?”

When he eventually became so weak that he could not perform salāh standing with the support of others, he performed a few salāh while sitting. In so doing, he demonstrated the real meaning of following the Sharī‛ah, the real definition of taqwā, and this is how one ought to choose the most cautious option [or opinion].”

  • Salaah becomes obligatory upon a Muslim, male and female once they reach puberty.
  • Missing any Fardh or Wajib Salaah intentionally and allowing them to become Qadha is a sinful act. One must at the earliest opportunity repent (Toubah) and complete any missed Salaah.
  • Females do not have to make up missed Salaah during menstruation and postnatal bleeding.
  • When making Qadha, one has to make intention of which Salaah you are reading e.g. “I intend to read 2 Rakaats Fardh Qadha Salaah of Fajr today.”
  • If you have missed many Salaah in the past and cannot be specific about dates then mention in the intention that you intend to offer the first Salaah that you have missed, e.g. “O Allah I intend to read 2 Rakaats Fardh Qadha Salaah of the first Fajr Salaah that I have missed.”
  • If one has been unable to make up for any missed Salaah and makes a will for fidyah to be given to the poor, then the amount of Sadaqatul Fitr will have to be given for each Salah.

According to the Soofia, salaat is in fact a supplication to and speech with Allah, and therefore needs thorough concentration. In case of other observances, we need not be so attentive. For example, the essence of Zakaat is to spend money for the pleasure of Allah. Spending in itself is so hard on a person that even if he does. it inattentively he would feel the pinch of it. Similarly, fasting requires giving up eating and drinking and sexual satisfaction. All these restrictions are really very hard even if not observed by proper attention and devotion.

On the other hand, Zikr and recitation of the Qur'an are the chief constituents of Salaat. If these are not done intelligently and attentively, they can make neither supplication nor speech. They are just like the ravings of a  person in high fever, which do not require any conscious effort nor carry any meaning for the listener. It is therefore necessary that we should be completely at tentive when in salaat, otherwise our salaat will be like the talk of a person in his Sleep, which carries no meaning for the listeners. nor any benefit accrues from it.

In the same way, Allah pays no heed to a salaat that is offered inattentively and without concentration. But even if our salaat is not up to the mark. as compared with that of the eminent people in the past, we should not give up  the practice. It is absolutely incorrect to think that there is no use offering a salaat unless it is perfect. To offer an imperfect salaat is far better than to give it up completely, as this shall result in punishments of a very drastic nature in the Hereafter. A school of Ulama have declared that person to be a kaafir who intentionally discards salaat.

It is therefore imperative on all of us to make sincere and genuine efforts to do justice to our salaat and pray to Allah to grant us the ability to offer salaat similar to that of the eminent people in the past, so that we may have at least one salaat of that nature to our credit for presentation before Allah.
