During March 2012, Sheikh Hazrat Mol Ibrahim Mia (Rahmatullah Alayhi) toured KZN promoting the recitation of Durood. I accompanied Sheikh (Rahmatullah Alayhi) to Durban. The plan was to conduct programmes at May Street Musjid (Zohr), Musjid-us-Saliheen, Sherwood (Maghrib) and Westville Juma Musjid (Esha).

Enroute to Durban, we received a call from the Imam of Westville Juma Musjid that the ameer of the Tabligh work there had requested Sheikh to address the musallees during the weekly Tabligh Bayaan slot.

Further, Mufti Ebrahim Desai (db) of Darul Iftaa, Sherwood, requested Sheikh (Rahmatullah Alayhi) to address the students of the Darul Iftaa after supper.

In my mind, I thought this was an ideal opportunity for Sheikh to promote the work of the zikr & islhah.

It came as a surprise then that Sheikh when addressing the students, spoke nothing in that line. In fact, Sheikh went on to advise them how to be good muftis and I remember him cautioning them to very careful when issuing fatawa. They were advised to research their work properly and not feel shy to say they don't know rather than say the wrong thing. If they slipped up, there was a chance of the community also slipping on the wrong path.

After Esha at the Westville Juma Musjid, Sheikh now took the weekly Tabligh slot. Here, Sheikh gave a “pukka” Tabligh bayan and even did a good tashkeel for the brothers to go out in the path of Allah. I clearly remember the Tabligh ameer shaking his head in surprise during the bayan. After the bayan, the ameer came to me and expressed his astonishment at the good Tabligh bayan Sheikh had delivered. He had expected something different and told me his regulars must be thinking he “paid” Sheikh to speak on those lines.

Lesson: Even though we may be involved primarily in a certain work of deen, we should not look down upon other efforts of deen and support those works in whatever way we can.
